Summary: | The use of a diffusion (social effects) model to explain fertility transitions is discussed. The two components of diffusion -- social learning & social influence -- are developed & incorporated into a formal economic decision model of fertility. Potential applications of the model in the US are outlined, including research on fertility decision making among adolescents, decisions concerning contraceptive method, reproductive health services utilization, & maternal employment. Methodological difficulties presented by the diffusion model are also examined. 76 References. J. Ferrari |
