Description
Summary:This analysis represents an exploratory effort to rethink the phenomenon of family care. Qualitative data from self-report diaries and descriptive family care scenarios highlight behavioral, cognitive, and emotional components of family care and generate researchable questions surrounding the interplay of gender and the expression of care. The data analysis indicates that while family members hold idealized notions of family care, their behaviors and feelings are often at odds with their ideologies. Furthermore, certain expressions of family care appear to be linked to issues of women's family status and power. The study emphasizes the need to conceptualize care multidimensionally in order to avoid the reification of gender and to explore family issues beyond the household.
