Summary: | An in-depth description & analysis of the practical & discursive aspects of the understanding of time in chess considers social, cultural, & cognitive processes. After outlining the Western practices of timing events during competitive chess matches, in which time has both fundamental importance & presents a constant concern, it is suggested that two radically different temporal structures are involved. An anthropological insight into the game from the standpoint of each competitor is developed, showing how different temporal structures (turn-taking time vs clock time) are constructed & articulated during the match. 4 Figures, 11 References.
