Description
Summary:Discusses the necessary means of promoting tolerance, morality, & social order in a multicultural society. Multicultural societies are characterized by moral pluralism, which results in often incompatible & conflicting conceptions of the good life, & it is argued that morality & social order in such circumstances require the cultivation of distinct public & private identities through moral education. Public identity is characterized by the understanding & respect of universal rules & rights that are commonly accepted by all members of the society, regardless of ethnic, cultural, or national background. However, moral education must also nourish nonpulbic identities, whereby children are allowed to develop their own distinct conceptions of personal identity & the good life. Moral education must also recognize the relationship between these identities & stress the fact that nonpublic identities must not infringe on public rights. Based on these assumptions, it is concluded that citizens must rejct personal conceptions of the good life that violate public morality & learn to adjust nonpublic identity to public morality when necessary. 16 References.
