Summary: | Recent changes in labor relations in the shipbuilding, metalworking, & automobile industries of Lisbon & Setubal, Portugal, are examined, focusing on what has occurred since 1987, when the country joined the European Community. Key changes have included globalization of the economy, the adoption of lean models of production, increased automatization, downsizing, new employment practices, restructuring of the market, & industrial relations. A literature review shows that some authors feel the changes have followed institutional models, eg, negotiation & arbitration, while others have pointed to antagonistic relationships marked by strikes & open conflicts. Analysis of data from employers & labor unions shows that both types of models have been followed. All three sectors, despite their differences in terms of technological & organizational modernization, have functioned as laboratories where new management & labor strategies can be tested. 3 Tables, 40 References.
