Summary: | A comment on Jay Belsky & David Eggebeen's (1991 [see abstract 9717597]) study of the effect of maternal employment on child development takes issue with their interpretation of the data. An effort to replicate Belsky & Eggebeen's & subsequent analyses of three sets of potential moderating variables suggests that the link between maternal employment & adjustment is weak. It is contended that secondary analyses should be considered exploratory, & established safeguards rigorously employed. It is concluded that the potential developmental risk of maternal employment or child care should be assessed using complex social ecology modeling. 2 Tables, 9 References. C. McSherry |
