Summary: | Reactions of intellectuals & others toward modern industrial economies are characterized in a framework not simply of social structure, but of symbolic meaning. Parallelisms between Marxist & Christian views of the world are identified. In particular, parallels are identified between Marxism & ascetic Protestantism. M. Weber's analysis of "the Protestant ethic" was a major shock to Marxism in its initial identification of these similarities, which showed the bourgeoisie trapped in ways similar to the proletariat.
