Summary: | The effectiveness of a prenatal care program in southern Spain in preventing low birthweight was examined through implementation of a 1981/82 preprogram case-control study involving 179 low-weight births & 395 normal-weight births & a 1990-1993 study, 6 years after program initiation, involving 251 low-weight births & 381 normal-weight births. Analysis revealed that, whereas nearly 33% of control mothers & 36% of case mothers did not receive prenatal care, 1981/82, only 1% of control mothers & 3.2% of case mothers did not receive prenatal care, 1990-1993. Prenatal care was not associated with low birthweight in the former study, but a strong association was found in the latter. Analysis stratifying by gestational age revealed that prenatal care had a significant relationship with less risk of low birthweight. 5 Tables, 35 References. Adapted from the source document. |
