Description
Summary:Argues that lying at the heart of the universal crisis in medicine, which threatens the prestige & image of the individual physician & questions ethical & professional values, is a profound conflict between the traditional professional culture -- based on traditional Hippocratic values & corporatism rooted in the Middle Ages -- a new entrepreneurial culture that creates conflicts of interest previously ignored, & a political culture that intervenes more & more not only in managerial processes but also in the process of defining the rules for ethical & disciplinary behavior. Emergence of new paradigms for the medical profession & consequences of the interaction of these three cultures force doctors to seek new solutions for uniting them without diluting the fundamental ethical values of medicine &, at the same time, guaranteeing continuous scientific & technical progress & clearer sociopolitical intervention. Only thus can the profession succeed in overcoming an identity crisis. It must beware the mistake of merely regarding it as the result of unfounded persecution of a professional group with an impeccable tradition. Adapted from the source document.
