Summary: | Recent policy discussions about extending the system of legal deposit to material published in formats other than print, eg, film, video, & TV, offer an opportunity to reflect on the role of audiovisual sources in the contemporary history of health & medicine. In the course of the 20th century, audiovisual media have become the means of communicating ideas & information about health & medicine to a mass audience. However, health & medical historians rarely draw on these media as historical source material. Here, a greater role for these sources is encouraged by outlining different ways of approaching audiovisual material as a historical source & introducing a selection of research tools & tips for accessing the audiovisual heritage.
