Description
Summary:Science has become one of the essential institutions of US society, & science & technology have become significant for presidential decision making. The nature of science policy advice to the president is examined, on the basis of historical records from the presidencies of Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, & Ford. Expert knowledge is found to have played a major role in many presidential decisions; at the same time, no agency has been specifically & uniquely responsible for such policy advice. The problems of forming science policy must be considered to enhance the future functioning of the presidency, since scientific issues will be crucial to many policy questions in the future. W. H. Stoddard.
