Summary: | Ethnobotanical survey data collected via unstructured interviews with 54 community members are drawn on to investigate the significance of plants for communities in metropolitan Recife, located in the coastal forest zone of Pernambuco, Brazil. The Index of Cultural Significance (Stoffle, R. W., et al, 1990) was used to determine the importance of each of 372 plant species across three communities, noting variations as a function of a community's socioeconomic & cultural profile. Analysis reveals that both native & introduced plant species are used for food & medicinal purposes in a fairly standardized way across diverse communities. Tables, Figures, References. K.
