Description
Summary:THIS STUDY REPRESENTS AN ATTEMPT TO ANALYZE LONG TERM TRENDS IN THE LABOR FORCE IN PUNJAB AND HARYANA USING CENSUS DATA. FIRST, THE AUTHOR TRIES TO SHOW THAT THE NATURE OF THE AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY PREDOMINATING IN THESE REGIONS HELPED TO DETERMINE THE SIZE OF THE AGRICULTURAL LABOR FORCE. IN OTHER WORDS, THE GREEN REVOLUTION CAN BE BOTH LABOR DISPLACING AND LABOR ABSORBING DEPENDING ON THE PREDOMINATING INPUTS. SECONDLY, IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT THE ECONOMIC GROWTH RESULTING FROM THE APPLICATION OF THAT TECHNOLOGY, OCCURRING AS IT DID IN THE PARTICULAR CULTURAL CONTEXTS OF PUNJAB AND HARYANA, RESULTED IN THE PREDOMINANCE OF MALES IN THE HIGH GROWTH AGRICULTURAL SECTOR.
