Summary: | Comments on Joseph de Rivera's "The Construction of False Memory Syndrome: The Experience of Retractors" (1997 [see abstract 9816044]). Several limitations in de Rivera's methodology are discussed, & susceptibility to false memories is explored in terms of a stress-diathesis model, including factors such as interrogative suggestibility, hypnotizability, fantasy proneness, & sleep paralysis. It is argued that false memory induction is possible with less invasive methods than those described by de Rivera. Results of a previously published study by Malinoski & Lynn (1995, 1996) are summarized in support of this argument, & an outline for the creation of a false abuse history in therapy is presented. 20 References.
