Description
Summary:Discussed is how gender differences may create obstacles or advance progress in therapy. The psychoanalytic approach in the four treatment dyads of F therapist-M patient, M therapist-F patient, F therapist-F patient, & M therapist-M patient is presented to suggest propensities. A developmental focus on gender's effect on the therapeutic relationship is indicated by the theoretical rationale from psychoanalytic literature, & by clinical practice discoveries. Because therapists' perceptions about gender identity, gender roles, & sexual partner orientation affect responses to clients, countertransference is a critical factor. Acknowledgement of gender components within the transference is recommended if therapists are to provide the best treatment possible. 37 References. HA
