Summary:Achieving equality between women and men was one of the ten commitments agreed to by the heads of state at the World Summit for Social Development and is a main priority of the international women's movement. Taking the decade of the seventies as a starting point, this article briefly reviews the progress that has been made in improving women's status and reducing gender inequalities, and charts the challenges ahead.
