Summary: | Microenterprise development offers the social work profession an exciting opportunity to transcend its traditional remedial & consumption-based social welfare approaches & to become engaged in a dynamic developmental process that both empowers & improves the material welfare of clients. The evolution of self-employment as an intervention in social work is described, & a detailed assessment of the Self-Employment Investment Demonstration project -- designed to foster microenterprise development projects among social assistance recipients in the US -- is provided. The project shows that social assistance clients can become independent, productive citizens, & contributors to economic development. 18 References. Adapted from the source document. |
