Summary:Examines the effects of Spanish colonialism to show the connection between change/continuity in Andean culture & power relationships that emerged from the conquest. A world-system perspective of the process of change focuses on the double dialectic of the interaction between the original native culture & the colonial system, on one hand, & the colonial system & core countries, on the other. Unlike social theories based on evolutionary notions of development, a cybernetic model considers both upward & downward dynamics to explain how economic factors caused noneconomic changes, which in turn influenced the economic process. The preconquest history of Andean society is traced, highlighting relationships prevalent in the Inca state. Postconquest structural & relationship changes are explored, along with strategies of collaboration, emigration, & acculturation employed by the Andean people to avoid the burdens of colonial rule & losses to the Andean civilization. 1 Table.
