Description
Summary:The role the military has played in the development of the Republic of Korea into a complex economic & political system nearing the status of an advanced industrialized society & democratization is examined. It is suggested that this transition has been facilitated by the veto power of the Korean military in the political background, & its role as guardian against internal & external threats, promoter of social mobility & economic development, & builder of political institutions. However, the military now faces a new challenge of redefining its role, which permits continued movement from authoritarianism while still maintaining domestic security. 3 Tables, 30 References. T.
