Summary:This special issue aims to provide an update on the debate surrounding Pacific Islander migration. The papers included in this volume focus on a number of issues that have been discussed in the academic literature and the media over recent years. Academics have long been interested in the issues of cultural change and migrant identities. However, only recently have sizeable communities of second generation Pacific Islander migrants emerged in the Pacific Rim which challenge some of the previously held beliefs about Pacific Islander transnationalism. This issue is discussed by Helen Lee's contribution on transnationalism by second generation Tongan migrants in Australia. Her contribution also discusses the future of remittances sent by Tongans in Australia in the light of a growing second generation within the Tongan Australian community.
