Description
Summary:Part of a symposium on Ruth Milkman's LA Story: Immigrant Workers and the Future of the US Labor Movement (2006) addresses what are termed omissions & unknowns. It is argued that an additional hundred pages would have led to the book's rooting in CA history, with the definition of union turnaround focusing on political power rather than traditional unionization rate measures. Milkman is chastised for ignoring the public sector & its unionism's role in the success of the Service Employees International Union's Justice for Janitors campaign. The impact of CA's direct democracy on union political power in CA is discussed, along with the political diversions caused by alternative, energy-drawing social & political movements in the state. Attention is given to the complicated role of religion in the Justice for Janitors campaign, the untold story of the Hollywood guilds & crafts, the unfinished tale of the drywallers organizing drive, & the rough edges of the Justice for Janitors approach.
