Summary: | Explores the changes occurring in academic feminism in terms of a move away from the cultural aspects of the discipline and its causation of funding shift and philosophical rethinking of what knowledge is. This shift is manifest in the 70's generation of feminist scholars now retiring from their university posts. With this comes the need that these second wave feminists record their triumphs and travails that a more expansive documentation will exist for the next wave of feminism. Provides examples from American and Canadian work towards this end while also showing the considerable differences between the scholastic generation that had to fight for equality and those that take it for granted. Goes on to show where some of the tensions within gender studies lie, such as the dogmatic recognition of some theories that overshadow others. Furthermore, as lines of study bifurcate within the ivory towers, such as feminist theory expounded within literary theory, the body of feminism seems to become diluted and distracted from its primary focus, a point which is difficult to agree upon. Concludes as it began, with strong consideration of the arts and aesthetics as contributing or hindering feminist theory. S. Fullmer |
