Summary: | The name of Carlo Castaldi is little remembered in Brazil. The few mentions of him are in reference to his study, "A aparaicao do demonio no Catule" (The Apparition of the Devil in Catule), which is somewhat of a classic in studies of popular religiosity, the only work published (in Queiroz, Maria Isaura Pereira de, et al, Estudos de sociologia e historia, 1957) during his stay in Brazil, 1953-1958. The author nevertheless considers this work to be one of the precursors of systematic anthropological studies on popular religiosity, realized by an anthropologist with specific academic training that enabled him to analyze the messianic movement of Igreja Adventista da Promessa, which culminated in the death of four servants accused of being possessed by the devil. This paper offers an account of Castaldi's five years in Brazil, especially of his research conducted for this study. References. S. Stanton |
