Summary: | This longitudinal study of lawsuits in the records of the labor relations tribunal (Conseil des Prud'hommes) in Arles during 1981, 1991 & 2001-2004 examines the working conditions of Moroccan & Tunisian agricultural workers in Bouches-du-Rhone Department, France. Following a brief description of the context & a few quantitative findings, attention is focused on the unjust OMI contract with its dispensations under which most seasonal workers are hired. These persons are kept in a single underqualified category, namely "seasonal worker." Many of the suits filed concern claims for seniority-based bonuses & overtime wages. The plaintiffs have difficulty winning their cases since they are facing defendants from an especially powerful sector in this French department. Adapted from the source document. |
