Summary: | Abstract Ischemia is a major etiological factor in the development and progression of congestive heart failure. Current pharmaceutical treatments do not address the underlying metabolic problem within the heart. Adenosine triphosphate levels, critical for the preservation of cellular integrity, intracellular enzymatic reactions, and function, are depleted with myocardial ischemia, and in heart failure as well. Future therapies should look to enhance myocardial energy metabolism in the failing heart. |
