Summary: | The article by Pols and colleagues addresses (two critical shortcomings in contemporary medical education: teaching students (1) to understand self-management and aid patients with chronic illnesses to learn the skills and (2) to work with patients as partners in the health care team. Based on a workshop with representatives from eight medical schools in Australia and New Zealand, the authors recommend a number of specific changes in the medical training curriculum. Their recommendations are right on target. [Reprinted by permission of Sage Publications, Ltd., copyright holder.] |
