Description
Summary:Information has been gradually accumulating showing that asthma might be a risk factor for COPD.5 Recently, Limb et al6 published a descriptive study of the outcomes for a small group of young adults who had well-defined moderate-to-severe allergic asthma as children. Large population database analyses show that regular use of ICSs is associated with fewer asthma-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths.8 A study of an asthmatic population in a health maintenance organization found that patients who did not fill their prescriptions for ICSs were more likely to be hospitalized for asthma.9 Unfortunately, most asthmatic patients might be poorly adherent to regular ICS use.
