Description
Summary:Presents a brief history of the work of The Samaritans in Thailand, a member of Befrienders International. The Samaritans began with a telephone crisis intervention hotline in Bangkok in 1978, for those in need of emotional support. With the many rapid changes that have taken place--the transformation of Thailand from an agriculture-based country to a newly industrialized country, the change from an extended-family pattern to that of the nuclear family, the migration of people from rural areas to the competitive urban environment, etc.--there has been an increase in social problems leading to more people becoming distressed and suicidal. Recognizing the increase in the need for their services, The Samaritans took the proactive approach of reaching out to the suicidal rather than just waiting to be contacted. The Outreach Program The Samaritans initiated was, however, not limited to the high-risk group resulting from the changes to society; it also covers those stricken by disease, and it aims to educate school-children as a means of suicide prevention.
