Summary: | In view of the Article by Lorraine Lipscombe and Janet Hux,1 and of the need to identify populations susceptible to diabetes mellitus type 2, we would like to draw attention to patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. There is a great need for intensive baseline screening, follow-up, and treatment of diabetes in patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.2,3 The implementation of low glycaemk index diets,5 promotion of active and healthy lifestyles,2,3 and collaboration of all parties involved with patients' care (physicians, mental health professionals, caregivers, family members, and the patients themselves) might actually contribute to the prevention of diabetes in this particularly vulnerable psychiatric population. |
