Summary:One hundred three patients with active endocarditis were studied; we compared the prognosis of those with positive (n=83) versus negative (n=20) blood cultures. Patients with negative blood cultures had a higher frequency of cardiac failure and valve rupture and/or perforation (40% vs 10%, p=0.002), and required surgical repair more frequently (65% vs. 46%).
