Description
Summary:Cryptosporidiosis is a serious enteric disease in neonatal ruminants, yet there is presently no established means of treating or preventing this infection. Paromomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic analogous in structure to neomycin. It has been shown to inhibit Cryptosporidium in cultures of human enterocytes and has been used to treat AIDS patients with acute cryptosporidiosis, with promising results. It has also shown promise when given therapeutically to SCID mice and piglets and when given prophylactically to experimentally or naturally infected dairy calves and kids. An acute natural outbreak of cryptosporidiosis on a large goat farm in the Sultanate of Oman resulted in the death of 242 animals ranging in age from 2 days to over 1 year. In the midst of this outbreak, we tested the prophylactic efficacy of paromomycin administered to a select group of newborn kids.
