Summary: | One element disregarded in Dr. Grimes's discussion was the possibility of domestic violence. One in every 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and it is estimated that 2.1 million American women are raped, physically assaulted, or both. Neither Dr. Daley nor Dr. K discussed this possibility with the patient, although the woman stated, regarding her partner, "emotionally we have no time for each other." Such a statement should be followed by questions regarding the possibility of domestic violence. For domestic violence to be confronted and reduced, it is imperative that physicians recognize the potential for domestic violence, even in what appears to be a stable, long-term relationship. |
