Summary:Most of the sulfotransferases participating in glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis have now been identified. Their essential role in generating binding sites for proteins interacting with glycosaminoglycans is apparent. These interactions may influence important biological processes such as growth control, signal transduction, cell adhesion and lipid metabolism. Gene targeting in mice as well as studies in Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans have shown that dysfunction or lack of glycosaminoglycan sulfotransferases may result in severely disturbed embryonic development.
