Summary: | Thoracic imaging with Tc-99m sestamibi can be used to evaluate cardiac perfusion and certain neoplastic processes, including breast carcinoma. Incidental increased uptake has been reported in various lung and bone cancers and lymphomas. Frequently, a focal area of increased uptake appears in the lower mediastinum, possibly indicating a mass or tumor-involved node and prompting further investigation. The authors report two cases that show this to be the normal right atrial appendage. Recognition of the tumor-imaging capabilities of Tc-99m sestamibi has steadily increased. However, an understanding of the normal variants during imaging may prevent unnecessary additional patient workups. |
