Summary: | Children around the globe experience war and violence. This author's own experience for the past 2 years working with traumatized children from the former Yugoslavia at a summer camp in Croatia has spurred interest in the psychological effects of war upon children and effective assistance to bring a sense of normalization to their lives. Pediatric nurses may encounter these children if parents have immigrated to the US or if nurses travel on medical missions. How can pediatric nurses help children who have experienced war, severe violence, or witnessed traumatic events? Even children in the US experience community violence. The effects from violence and intervention methods discussed here can also be appropriate for some of these children. |
