Summary:Ethnicity is widely used as a study variable by community health researchers. However, there is little consistency in the definition of ethnicity and the process by which ethnicity is assigned. Potential problems in the use of ethnicity as a study variable are discussed as well as suggestions for improvements. Chez les chercheurs en santé communautaire, on a très souvent recours aux dimensions ethniques comme variables explicatives. Cependant, il y a très peu de constance dans la définition de ce qui constitue une dimension ethnique et dans la façon dont ces dimensions sont évaluées. On discute ici des problèmes qui se posent avec le recours aux dimensions ethniques comme variables explicatives et l'on présente des suggestions d'amélioration à cet égard.
