Description
Summary:An accurate and definitive distinction between liver abscess and hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with chronic alcoholic liver disease poses a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the clinician, but it is of the utmost importance because of significant differences in management and prognosis. The role of the In-111 leukocyte scan in the localization of areas of infection is well established; however, uptake by a tumor that resembles uptake in an abscess can also occur. The authors present a case of a proved hepatocellular carcinoma in which the uptake of In-111 granulocytes mimicked that in an abscess. Thus, cautious interpretation of In-111 leukocyte imaging is warranted in patients with underlying factors predisposing to neoplastic conditions.
