Description
Summary:The rapid expansion of psychology in Mexico since the 1940s is chronicled. Though there continues to be a high desertion rate & low % of those actually obtaining degrees, it is argued that contemporary Mexican psychology is nonetheless developing into an original discipline exhibiting a critical awareness of its historical background & an insistence on applied research that is increasingly interdisciplinary & socially conscious. Detailed examination of the educational & training requirements is provided & compared to those of other countries. Current research being conducted by psychologists in more than thirteen subspecialties of the field are highlighted. Research, however, continues to be largely unsystematic & plagued by financial constraints. Suggestion is made for psychologists in industrial nations to engage in collaborative research efforts with their Mexican colleagues; an annual review of psychology in Mexico would increase worldwide awareness of current developments. 194 References.
