Summary: | A design is presented in which cells are immobilized within a bed of glass fibers and are fed by continuous perfusion of liquid medium. The advantages of the design are first supported by a consideration of previously published data and theoretical relationships developed for fibrous beds. Next, experimental results based on this design are presented. Finally, unexpected productivity increases that appear to be unique to the fiber bed design are discussed. |
