Description
Summary:In a small study in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, given the same mipomersen regimen for only 13 weeks, liver fat was measured by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in all participants.6 The investigators of that study noted a small increase in hepatic lipid content, from a low baseline of 1.2% to 2.1%; however, greater accumulation could occur after long-term treatment. Because high-intensity statin treatment, as coadministered to most patients in both studies, could restrict triglyceride accumulation by increasing the hepatic oxidation of fatty acids,7 steatosis might develop most rapidly with monotherapy.
