Illthrift in suckling lambs attributed to lung pyogranuloma formation
Lung sections stained with Gomori's methenamine silver stain revealed the presence of a large number of fungal structures, morphologically consistent with Alternaria or Helminthosporium species, within most (15 of 20) pyogranulomas in lamb 1 ( Fig 1d ); a smaller number of (mostly lysed) fungi...

Summary: | Lung sections stained with Gomori's methenamine silver stain revealed the presence of a large number of fungal structures, morphologically consistent with Alternaria or Helminthosporium species, within most (15 of 20) pyogranulomas in lamb 1 ( Fig 1d ); a smaller number of (mostly lysed) fungi was observed in the lung lesions of lamb 2.\n Alternaria species is also known to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised human beings ( Vartivarian and others 1993 ). [...]on the basis of the accumulated evidence, the most likely explanation for the condition is that it was a consequence of wound infections acquired during tail docking. |
