Effect of delignification pretreatment and selective enrichment on methane production from cattle waste

Three delignification pretreatments in the semicontinuous digestion of cattle slurry were studied: cattle slurry and inoculum from cattle waste digester (control); cattle slurry, inoculum, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide; cattle slurry, inoculum, potassium permanganate, and sodium hydroxide....

Description
Summary:Three delignification pretreatments in the semicontinuous digestion of cattle slurry were studied: cattle slurry and inoculum from cattle waste digester (control); cattle slurry, inoculum, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide; cattle slurry, inoculum, potassium permanganate, and sodium hydroxide. Hydrogen peroxide addition increased gas production by 10 per cent. Gas production was lower when potassium permanganate was added than in the control. Selective enrichment of Gram-negative and Gram-positive spore formers in the digester with penicillin and heat treatment was tested. No improvement in gas production was seen.
