Summary: | This report shows that when chondrocytes from the chick embryo tibiotarsus are cultured in monolayers, they form vesicles which are released into the culture medium. These vesicles possess all of the properties of matrix vesicles which have been isolated from cartilagenous tissues. They contain high levels of alkaline phosphatase and Ca super(2+), and they have phospholipid and cholesterol contents very similar to those reported for matrix vesicles. The results suggest that the chondrocyte monolayer system may serve as a model for studying the events leading to the formation and calcification of matrix vesicles by chondrocytes. |
