Description
Summary:It has been found that social withdrawal is common among burn victims following discharge from hospital. This may be indicative of a lack of professional follow-up services and counselling. Self help groups may be effective in helping such individuals adjust to the implications of their injury and community re-integration by offering support and information. A student's experience with such a group is related and the role of an occupational therapist as a consultant to the group is described. It is advocated that occupational therapists provide a complete rehabilitation program by becoming involved in group programs for burn victims prior to and after discharge.
