Description
Summary:The hypothesis of a degenerescence of Langerhans islets in senile animals has been tested by the morphometrical analysis of the pancreas of rats 6 and 24 months old. The method has allowed to show the presence in old animals of a higher number of islets per area unit; the distribution curve shows a shifting towards the larger sizes. If the surrounding connective tissue which thickens with age is not taken into account, the relative volumes occupied by the sinusoid capillaries and the A and B cells appear similar in the two age groups, as well as the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio of these cells and the granulation of the cells secreting insulin. So, the morphological aspect of Langerhans islets does not reveal a decrease of the insulin stores in the pancreas of old rats.
