Description
Summary:An outbreak of nosocomial colonization and infection in a newborn nursery due to E. coli 0125:K70 is described. Employing attack rate analysis, colonization with the epidemic serotype was epidemiologically linked to the ingestion of expressed breast milk (EBM). This occurred when the organism was isolated infrequently from other sources in the province, emphasizing the localized nature of the outbreak. Investigation of the handling of EBM revealed inadequacies in technique and correction of these inadequacies together with the institution of adequate control measures led to a prompt reduction of colonization and subsequent eradication of the organism from the nursery.
