Summary: | The perception
versus response issue in selective attention was investigated using an experimental procedure designed to distinguish the effects of pre-cue enhancement and post-cue disruption. This entailed a comparison of pre/post differences under partial and whole report in a dichotic selection task. Evidence of pre-cue enhancement was found when the selection was based on voice, but not when it was based on semantic class. The results are interpreted as confirming the predictions of Broadbent's (1971) perceptual selection theory, and are shown to be inexplicable in terms of current response selection theories of attention. |
