Summary: | Comments on Cheryl Mattingly's, Linda M. Hunt's, & Linda C. Garro's (all, 1998) articles exploring various forms of reasoning used by sick people & those around them to understand a disorder & take action to ease its effects. It is suggested that, as a group, these articles demonstrate the value of contextually sensitive, experience-near approaches to data collection. Yet, the data presented are also patterned & systematic, which raises a discussion of how formal analytical techniques utilized in an explicitly comparative perspective might aid in elucidating & validating ethnographic insights. The challenge posed by these articles is both to document locally variant forms of reasoning & to build a broader comparative theory. 3 References. T. Nagai |
