Summary:Fifty-five per cent of t-tube samples show bacterial growth. Sterile biliary tracts remain sterile for three to five days after surgery, as measured by t-tube samples. Without antibiotics, no bacterial reduction occurred when more than 100,000 organisms were present in the bile. Administration of antibiotics did not result in reduction of bile bacterial counts when tetracycline or aminoglycosides were given. Mezlocillin caused marked reduction and even elimination of bacteria from bile. However, antibiotic therapy for the treatment of bacterial infection of the bile is reasonable only after decompression of obstructive jaundice since levels of antibiotic in bile are achieved only in the absence of obstruction.
