Effect of tinidazole on the human oral microflora: a comparison between high single and low repeated doses

Tinidazole capsules were given orally in doses of 150mg every 12 h for 7 days to ten patients and as a 1 g single dose to another ten patients. Serum and saliva specimens were taken during 14 days for assay of tinidazole and for cultivation of aerobic and anaerobic oral bacteria. Mean serum concentr...

Description
Summary:Tinidazole capsules were given orally in doses of 150mg every 12 h for 7 days to ten patients and as a 1 g single dose to another ten patients. Serum and saliva specimens were taken during 14 days for assay of tinidazole and for cultivation of aerobic and anaerobic oral bacteria. Mean serum concentration varied between 3·5 and 4·7 mg/l from six to 180 h after administration, in the group receiving the drug as repeated 150mg doses. In the group receiving tinidazole as a 1 g single dose, the mean serum concentration after 6h was 19·3mg/l. Saliva concentrations were of the same magnitude as those in serum in both groups. In the ten patients receiving repeated 150mg doses, only minor changes in the oral microflora were observed, while distinct changes in the numbers of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria were noticed in the ten patients receiving a I g single dose. In this group the amounts of free volatile fatty acids in saliva were also affected.
